Air Source Heat Pumps: Why to Think about a Boiler Replacement Before Winter

Updated: 17 hours ago

You’ve done your homework. You know that ASHP means air source heat pump and that heat pumps are more efficient, lower carbon, and the future of home heating in the UK. But if you’re still weighing up whether now is the right time to install one - this guide is for you.

Here’s why getting ahead of the curve could save you stress, money, and hassle later.

Is a Heat Pump a Good Boiler Replacement?

Heat pumps aren’t new. They’ve been around for decades and are now a cornerstone of the UK’s net-zero plan, but they are relatively new in the UK. The good news is that Your Energy Your Way has been installing heat pumps for 7 years in all types of houses. You can read some of our case studies in other blogs:

Did you know that heat pumps:

  • Work in homes with all levels of insulation and sizes of pipework

  • Are 4x more efficient than traditional gas boilers

  • Work year-round - even in freezing weather

But what many homeowners don’t realise is that the best time to install one is before your existing boiler fails. Why? Because heat pump installation takes planning - especially if you want to coordinate it with upgrades like new radiators, solar PV, or home insulation. Waiting for your old system to break down mid-winter puts you on the back foot.

Upgrading from a Gas Boiler to a Heat Pump: What to Consider

Replacing a boiler is typically a one-day job. Replacing it with a heat pump? That’s a step up - but one that pays off.

A properly designed heat pump system considers:

  • Your home’s layout and heat loss profile

  • The size and placement of radiators or underfloor heating

  • Integration with solar PV or battery storage

  • Your hot water needs and storage tank setup

At Your Energy Your Way, we treat every install as a bespoke project - because it is. And by planning it on your terms (not in a heating emergency), you get the right solution at the right pace.

Thinking of Pairing It with Solar? You're Already Halfway There

If you're considering solar or already have panels installed, you’re in a fantastic position to maximise the value of a heat pump.

Heat pumps can run partially on solar-generated electricity, reducing your reliance on the grid and lowering running costs. Our team specialises in designing integrated home energy systems - so your heating, hot water, and EV charging (if you have it) can all work together seamlessly.

Based on real installation data, government incentives, and performance modelling, see our blog that details what energy-efficient upgrades can actually deliver - and how to get the best bang for your buck.

Heat Pump Installation Costs, UK Grants & 0% VAT in 2025

Good news: if you’re replacing a gas boiler with a heat pump, you could be eligible for a £7,500 grant through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).

This government-backed scheme is designed to make low-carbon heating more accessible to UK homeowners. The grant is applied for directly by the installer, so there's no need for lengthy applications or red tape on your part - we’ll handle that for you.

You're eligible if:

  • You’re replacing a fossil fuel heating system (like a gas or oil boiler)

  • You’re not keeping a gas boiler as a backup (i.e. no hybrid systems)

  • You own the property (homeowners and landlords qualify)

In addition to the grant, 0% VAT still applies to heat pump installations - further reducing your upfront costs. If you choose to install your heat pump alongside a solar PV system or EV charger, those qualify for 0% VAT too, which can make a significant difference to your total investment.

We'll walk you through every step of the process - from grant eligibility to system design and installation  - so you know exactly what to expect, with no surprises.

Real Homeowners, Real Comfort

Our customers often tell us they don’t miss their gas system one bit - and love the even, steady warmth and modern controls that come with a heat pump.

Let’s Talk About Your Heating Future

You’ve done the research. You understand the benefits. Now it’s just a matter of timing.

Our team can help you assess whether your home is heat pump-ready and how to phase the upgrade in a way that fits your budget and lifestyle. Whether you want to combine it with solar, plan for an EV charger, or simply replace an ageing boiler - now’s the time to explore your options.
