Adding 13.5kWh of extra battery storage to an existing solar system – giving this couple even more control over their energy.
Earlier this year, we installed a powerful, future-ready energy system for a couple in Hertfordshire. It included:
13 x 470W Aiko Neostar Solar PV Panels
A Tesla Powerwall 3, including whole house backup
A Tesla EV charge point
Integration with their existing Solar PV system
But there was one missing piece…
Our customer had been eagerly awaiting the release of the Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion Pack so they could double their home battery capacity and increase their battery charge rates to 8kW. That wait is finally over—and last week, we added an additional 13.5kWh, bringing their total to 27kWh of energy storage. Now they have so much potential to generate, already peaking over 11kW at one time since the install! There is even room to add another expansion pack in future!

✅ Why They Wanted to Expand Their Battery System
The homeowner had already embraced renewables and was generating plenty of electricity, but they weren’t able to store as much as they needed. Here’s why adding the expansion pack made perfect sense:
🔋 1. More Solar, More Storage
Their 13-panel system can produce significant energy, especially on long summer days. Alongside their existing Solar PV install their 13.5kWh Powerwall 3 would fill up quickly and the rest of the solar went to the grid.
With an extra 13.5kWh added, they can now:
Store more of what they generate
Have a faster charge rate of 8kW, up from 5kW
Use it later in the day or overnight
Maximise their return on solar investment
Charge up with more off peak, cheaper, lower carbon energy and sell it back to the grid to generate a better return
🚗 2. High Evening Demand
Like many of our early adopter clients, they’re driving, so they have an EV to charge as well as the usual evening load of cooking, lighting and entertainment.
Now with 27kWh of capacity, they can comfortably run their home through the evening—even on cloudy days—without needing the grid.
🌍 3. Energy Security & Future-Proofing
With smart tariffs our customers can charge their batteries up overnight and then keep their home running all day even when the sun doesn't shine. Although power cuts are rare, when they happen, you feel the difference between 13.5kWh and 27kWh. Throw in a bit of sunshine and they could live off grid for days or weeks!

🧰 Why We Recommend the Expansion Pack for Some Homes
Not every household needs this much storage—but if you have high energy usage, or want to participate in more energy arbitrage, or maybe have a decent-sized solar array and / or a heat pump, you’ll likely benefit from additional capacity.
Each Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion Pack adds 13.5kWh and connects directly to your existing setup
Increases the battery charging rate to 8kW from 5kW
It’s cheaper and easier to install at the same time, but it can be added later—as we did here
It gives you control, flexibility, and peace of mind

🔎 FAQs About the Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion Pack (UK)
❓ Can I add an expansion pack to my existing Powerwall 3?
Yes—and this install shows exactly how. It integrates directly with your current system if you have a Powerwall 3.
❓ Is 27kWh of storage overkill?
No. If you’ve got solar, electric heating, high energy consumption or just want to take part in more energy arbitrage. It can also mean you can stay off-grid for longer and avoid buying electricity during peak hours.
❓ What’s the cost of a Powerwall 3 Expansion Pack in the UK?
Costs vary based on install type. We’ll always give you a clear, honest quote.
